Help! Help! I’m making an art site!

I love the smell of code in the morning.

I love the smell of code in the morning.

Since I started shamelessly promoting my Shiny New Website all over facebook, I’ve gotten a couple questions from friends asking how to do certain things or expressing interest in general in putting up art sites of their own. So, in the interest of helping out said friends or anyone else who’s looking to put one together, here’s a bit of an overview of what I did to create this site.

This is not intended to be an all-you-need guide to the entire process of setting up a website- there are a lot of much better, much more in-depth resources out there for that (for example, this guide at Lines and Colors). It is, however, meant to be a good starting point for anyone trying to begin bridging the gap between art student and professional- since that’s the position I’m in myself. Hopefully, it can give you a general overview of what you’re getting yourself into, as well as an idea of how I went about making this site.

Wrestling with Wordpress

Attention, dear world: I hate customizing Wordpress.

Perhaps I should clarify: I really, really hate customizing Wordpress.

Three days of agony, agony, trying to wrangle the layout into matching the rest of the site. It’s.. mostly there. There are bugs and idiosyncracies that I, frankly, cannot explain. As I was working, there were all sorts of odd problems: I’d sort out how to put in the header, and it would be in the wrong spot. I’d fix that, and the background would disappear. The fonts are sometimes right and sometimes not.  It has been days of headaches and mysterious “one step forwards, two steps back” progress:.

Also I may have thrown away a day or two playing Plants Vs Zombies. (Curse you, PopCap)

In any event, this will be the end of the boring “dur hur coding” posts- soon, there will be art! In the meantime, if you desire brand new, fresh, hot off the press, grade-a, cutting edge, never-before-seen, two-dimensional, all digital, did I mention that it’s brand new? ok, just doodled in a few minutes Liz art… check out the dailybean on twitter.

Get to Work!

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Alright, dear friends & future readers, after a solid 2-3 years sans art site/blog, I’ve finally begun putting a new one together! Lots of exciting things planned- well, not really. But things at any rate.

First and foremost my goal is to have, well, my art up on the internet again. (Outside of things like DeviantArt and Facebook.) A non-embarrassing place I can point to and say “hey, I do this stuff!” My second hope is that by having a nifty place to put content, I might be motivated produce more content. Who knows, maybe I’ll finally get to that webcomic I’ve been dreaming of.

I’ll also be working on an easily-updateable sketchblog, so I won’t be able to get lazy about updating,  and so I can natter on uninterestingly about the various mundane details of my variously mundane life. I promise it won’t all be World of Warcraft.

So, these are the things to look forward to! Except, just for me, because this won’t actually be posted until after I’ve finished all that work.
